Linda Dewar: Music

The Highland Clans

(Linda Dewar)

The mountains rise defiantly above the sea and sand
Brown peat-colored rivers flow across this rugged land
On purple heather moors the Red and Roe deer make their home
Among the many ancient empty houses made of stone

It was a proud and noble race that dwelled there in the North
From sons of Kings and Heroes Great, the mighty clans came forth
For a thousand and five hundred years the Highlands held her clans
And now a cold and lonely wind sweeps o'er deserted lands

It wasn't plague or famine that removed them from her midst
Freedom's call rang loudly inside every Highland breast
The love they had for their true King made them go to war
But now their lifeless bodies lie upon Culloden moor

The loyal clans have lost their lands, never to return
Banished Highland families watched their houses burn
Exiled to many foreign lands across the sea and foam
Blown like seeds upon the wind, forever they will roam
