Better Late Than Never

I'm awful about keeping this site updated... sorry about that! But as of today it's current, and I'll try to be more dilligent about keeping it that way.

This year's series of ceilidhs to benefit the local chapter of An Comunn Gaidhealach have been moved to a new venue and a new night - they're now on Wednesdays in the Aberfeldy Town Hall. It's actually more fun there, I think, and the crowds have been great.

I've been practicing with a new band that's doing predominantly Gaelic songs. We formed the band as a one-off to compete in the Gaelic Mod, which will be in Caithness this year. The practices have been so much fun that we've added to our repertoire, and will probably keep the band going, just to see what happens. Now, here's the confusing part: For the time being, the band is called Fonnmhor, and that's what you'll see listed in the Mod programs. That's just a temporary name, though, and once the Mod is over in October, the permanent name will be Togarrach.

There's lots of new stuff happening with Simply Burns, too. I won't repeat it all here, but go to our web site at www.simplyburns.com to see what's happening.

Cheers for now...

Another Summer!

Well, another year has gone by, and here we are getting ready to start another season of the An Comunn Gaidhealach Tuesday-night Ceilidhs. This will be my third year as a regular performer, and I'm really looking forward to the first one on June 2. We'll be back in the "big room" at Moness Country Club again, and many of the usual suspects will return. I'm particularly happy to see my friend Jimmy Lindsay returning after a year off to recover from surgery... his delightful smile and his wizardry on the button accordion were missed. Jock Ferguson will be back again with his songs, Alan Brown will return to compere, and a few new folk will be joining us as well. I have a few new songs to introduce... or I will if I manage to finishes memorizing the words!
Meanwhile, things are going well for Simply Burns. We were interviewed live on Celtic Music Radio last weekend, and our album was album of the week. Bookings for the summer are in the works... keep an eye on the Calendar Dates section of this site--I'll add them as they become finalized.
I've been working with my fellow Burns-mate Douglas Craik on his first solo album, and it's going to be a great one. Look for the release sometime late this summer.

Simply Burns CD and Launch Party

Well, it's finally here. We've completed the Simply Burns CD, and the launch party will be held this Sunday, October 5, in the Dewar Room (gotta love the name!) at Castle Menzies--that's in Weem, just across Wade's Bridge from Aberfeldy.

I'm really pleased with the final result... we were able to work really well together and created some arrangements in the studio that will now become a part of the live show. And speaking of that, live bookings are now being arranged for 2009... more about that on the Calendar page of this site soon.

One thing that we're all very proud of is the fact that the CD is a very local product. We recorded at Red Barn Studios, just outside Perthshire in Longforgan. The graphic designer and photographer are both from the Aberfeldy area, the photos were taken at the Kenmore hotel, and the manufacturer is located in Birnam, just next to Dunkeld.

If you're local, come join us at the launch party on Sunday-- 2:00 to 5:00, a mini-concert, wine, beer, soft drinks and canapes, and the very first opportunity to buy the new CD.

Simply Burns

Local folk here in Aberfeldy may recall the "Simply Burns" show that I participated in last January at the Watermill. A group of four artists - Douglas Craik, Claire Hewitt, Anna Hepburn, and myself - presented an evening of Robert Burns' songs and poems, with Ron Young serving as compere. The show was great fun to do, and afterward we were all flooded with positive comments and requests to do it again.

I'm very pleased to say that the "Simply Burns" group have been reunited on a more lasting basis. We've been in studio recording tracks from the original show for about a month now, and hope to have a CD out very soon.

Along with issuing the CD, we've also taken out the live show, dusted it off, and will soon be taking it on the road. Next year, 2009, will bring Robert Burns' 250th birthday, and as Scotland prepares for a year of celebration, this will be our way of joining in.

I don't have specifics about any performances yet-- the booking is ongoing. But there will soon be a "Simply Burns" web site where you can check for upcoming dates. Watch this space for more news and to find the address of the web site as soon as it goes "live."
